As the staff and pupils of Challney Girls High School in Luton look forward to moving into the school's new building towards the end of this year, Bilco has ensured safe and easy access to an area that most of them will never see.

Bilco has supplied five D-50T roof hatches to Tilbury Contracts which will provide access to the roof area for cleaning and maintenance purposes.

Each hatch measures 2,000 x 2,000 mm and features overlapping covers and a spring operation system to enable smooth, easy-to-operate access at all times.

D-50T hatches are available in a range of sizes. Their heavy gauge construction and positive latching mechanism ensures that the hatch remains secure while providing safe and easy access to and from the roof area.

The overlapping cover design, fully welded corners on the cover and curb, EPDM rubber gasket and fully insulated cover and curb help architects and specifiers to meet Building Regulation requirements for air tightness and thermal efficiency. The curb features the Bil-Clip® flashing system, an innovative method to quickly and easily secure single-ply roofing material to Bilco roof products

Each hatch is constructed with compression spring operators to provide smooth, easy, one-hand operation, ensuring that it meets the requirements of manual handling regulations. Anyone using the hatch can keep one hand on the ladder at all times, even when opening and closing the cover.

Richard Sawyer is the construction and surveying manager with Tilbury Contracts, the roofing contractor on the Challney project. He said:

"We were taken on to supply and install a monolithic waterproofing system to the roof areas of four buildings totalling approximately 4000 m2, including inverted roof insulation, paving and ballast roof finishes. We also supplied and installed the Bilco D-50T access hatches which were specified by the project architect, ACP.

"The whole project has been a huge success so far, with our part of the building works being finished on time and to the highest standard."
