Social housing providers are being urged to act now to protect vulnerable communities from potentially life-threatening arson attacks which traditionally peak in the run up to Bonfire Night.
According to official statistics, those living on the lowest incomes are 31 times more likely to suffer arson attacks than others and are 16 times more likely to die as a result of a fire. Many homes and businesses are targeted via the letterbox, invariably cutting off an escape route.
50% of all fires in the UK are arson-related and arson costs the economy £53.8 million pounds each week in England and Wales.
