Confidential documents from dozens of Cheltenham residents have been destroyed securely by Printwaste Recycling & Shredding to raise £109 for a Charlton Kings school charity and increase awareness of the need for people to protect themselves against identity fraud.

One of the UK's specialists in confidential data destruction, Printwaste used its high-security mobile shredder at Balcarras School to safely dispose of sensitive information and prevent it from getting into the wrong hands.

The event was held during October's National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, which highlights the risks and high costs to individuals and businesses of becoming victims of identity fraud.

Commenting on the successful day, Printwaste Managing Director Don Robins said: "It was a great success with more 100 people bringing their personal records and documents for secure shredding and eventual recycling. Securely disposing of personal information is vitally important for individuals, businesses and organisations to protect against identity theft and fraud, which costs the UK economy millions of pounds each year.

"Everyone was very supportive and pleased that they could dispose of items such as old passports, utility bills and business documents responsibly. Many people also remarked on the value of our service, particularly for larger volumes of material that home shredders would struggle with. We are now planning to hold similar events around the region in the future," added Don.

People were particularly reassured to witness the destruction process, as parent Julian Bullas, whose daughter Aimee attends the school, commented: "It's a fantastic idea as shredding takes a long time at home. You have to be very careful with important documents, so it's reassuring to see them destroyed in front of you."

Another nearby resident, Keith Tarling agreed, saying: "I had a number of old business documents that I had to get rid of, but were too much for a home shredder. It's a great idea that helps everyone."

All proceeds from the Shred Day will be donated to an African charity that the school supports and the shredded paper will be recycled into new paper items.
