It has been a busy first half to 2011 for Manchester frozen foods producer Glendale Foods, which offers an extensive portfolio of packaged lines for retailers and meal components for the food manufacturing and food service sectors.

It has invested close to £1 million in new plant and equipment at its Salford processing plant, with a view to gearing up its food development capabilities and production throughput. It has even adopted a brand new corporate identity in a more feminine pink.

"We have established ourselves as a key service partner to the food manufacturing and foodservice industries, through the provision of bespoke and off-the-shelf meal components, and this massive investment underlines our commitment to being amongst the best in the business," says Glendale Chairman, John Mortimer. "The fact that we can take raw ingredients, then grill, steam, roast or oven bake them and freeze down to minus 18ºC in less than an hour, means that all the flavour, freshness and nutrition is locked in."

"This is the biggest investment in Glendale's 28 year history and it sets us up to be a very flexible, high quality component producer," adds John. "Our increased capacity will enable us to expand our facilities for cooked sausages, burgers, dumplings, stuffings, pizza toppings, meatballs and the like. We offer a complete service for any company looking for cooked meal components and can take a brief through from concept to launch, working closely with the customer's buying and development teams."

The capital investment centres on a new multi-zone moving belt oven, which provides higher productivity due to faster cooking times over a multiplicity of products, and an in-line spiral freezer, giving a choice of refrigerant airflow to improve yield, flavour and texture. Together, this high-end food processing technology gives Glendale upwards of 60% more capacity than its old cooking line. Also new is a state-of-the-art meatball forming device, which delivers precisely rounded meat, sausage and stuffing balls, together with high portioning accuracy.

The company has also secured £100,000 in energy efficiency financing from the Carbon Trust, for implementing extensive energy saving measures to reduce its carbon footprint. New lighting technology, energy saving motor and drive management, regular heating system maintenance and other initiatives have already helped offset the severe impact of ongoing energy price rises.

"This loan and subsequent investment should have provided substantial savings on our power bills, although increases in electricity tariffs have inevitably limited their effect. Even so, it has certainly helped us exercise some form of control over the ever increasing price of power. At the same time, it has helped our 'green credentials' and shown that we are doing our bit towards the environment," concludes John Mortimer.
