A record-breaking 106 Muscle Warriors took part in a gruelling eight mile off road challenge, the GRIM 8, on Saturday 15 January, raising over £21,000 for the Muscle Help Foundation charity. The GRIM 8 challenge is a mud-spattered, sodden, exhausting run across Army vehicle testing tracks, which pushes competitors to their limits through dirty puddles and muddy tracks.
GRIM 8 race organiser, John Gladwin, says, "The Muscle Help Foundation supports the GRIM 8 event more than any other charity in the UK. Over 100 Muscle Warriors took part over the weekend which is incredible, they really add to the event's sense of occasion and we are delighted to welcome them year after year. We are now in our ninth year and we have grown to become the largest off-road event in the country. People love the sense of camaraderie as they battle through waist high water and crawl under the camouflage netting through yellow mud!"
This was the third consecutive year that the Muscle Help Foundation's growing army of fundraisers from across the UK, known as Muscle Warriors, have taken part in the GRIM 8 challenge, which took place near Aldershot in Hampshire at the weekend.
Mark Power, the fastest Muscle Warrior with a time of one hour, three minutes and 29 seconds, comments, "I never thought something so grim would bring a smile to my face and I am looking forward to coming back next time to support the fantastic work of the Muscle Help Foundation."
Muscle Warriors raise money to pay for Muscle Dreams - amazing once in a lifetime experiences in the UK designed for children whose lives are afflicted by the relentless muscle wasting disease Muscular Dystrophy. The Muscle Warriors were the single largest troop of charity fundraisers at the event and the money raised enables the charity to move a little closer towards its goal of realising 657 Muscle Dreams - one for each muscle of the human body.
Showing that the event is about putting the fun into fundraising, Ryan Morgan, a Muscle Warrior from the Ladbrokes corporate team, had an interesting approach to training. "After two bottles of wine, the GRIM challenge seemed like a great idea. I did a one mile walk around the park in preparation and lots of mental training by watching the cracking Muscle Help Foundation GRIM videos on YouTube. I've seen my wife give birth to my four children and now I understand the pain she went through!"
Chief Muscle Warrior and CEO of the charity, Michael McGrath, says, "The event was a resounding success thanks to an awesome effort from all Muscle Warriors! There were 106 in total, absolutely smashing the record for the single largest GRIM team raising funds for a single cause. As of today, £21,000 has been raised online through Virgin Money Giving, Justgiving, various matched-funding initiatives and individual contributions. Our goal is £25,000 and I feel confident we'll achieve that."
Preparations for the next Muscle Warrior GRIM Challenge are now underway, so if you would like to be involved make sure you keep Saturday 3 December 2011 free. Michael McGrath is now actively recruiting more people than ever to join. "Our 2011 goal is for every Muscle Warrior who participated this weekend to bring a friend, helping us to sign up 200 Muscle Warriors, with the aim of raising at least £30,000 to provide more Muscle Dreams for children suffering from Muscular Dystrophy."

About The Muscle Help Foundation, Muscle Dreams™ and Muscle Warriors™
The Muscle Help Foundation was co-founded by Michael McGrath (aka the Chief Muscle Warrior and DreamMaker). Michael is CEO of the charity.
Muscle Dreams are amazing experiences designed to help children and young people in the UK whose lives are afflicted by the muscle-wasting disease, Muscular Dystrophy (MD) - the opportunity to live a dream, or perhaps fulfil a cherished ambition.
PLEASE NOTE - the charity works very hard to avoid language such as 'grant wishes', which is very much in keeping with the approach of some other well-known charities. The Muscle Help Foundation delivers Muscle Dreams - we would be grateful if editors would ensure that this is communicated in this manner.
Muscular Dystrophy is the single biggest genetic killer of children in our world today. With some 75,000 UK sufferers being robbed of their mobility, independence and finally, for those with the most severe form known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), their lives. The charity delivers experiences for people directly affected by this debilitating disease.
Muscle Warriors are those generous-hearted people who use for example the power of sport to engage, inspire and raise vital funds - Muscle Warriors run across deserts, they sprint along race tracks, do triathlons and ironman's as well as events called GRIM; they climb mountains and participate in often extreme endurance activities to enable Muscle Dreams to happen. They reinforce the robust link between muscles, movement and sport.
