Sao Paulo, Brazil ― Allison Transmission and MAN/Volkswagen presented an innovative proposal to the construction market at the recent Concrete Show 2011 in São Paulo, Brazil (August 31st - September 2nd). MAN Latin America and Allison Transmission have jointly developed a new, technologically-advanced, affordable vehicle that has been customised for concrete applications. The VW 24.250E Worker 6x2 concrete mixer is equipped with a 3000 Series transmission and is designed to outperform many of the 6x4 manual trucks typically used in construction. Nearly all concrete mixers operating in Brazil today are in a 6x4 or 8x4 configuration. The use of a fully automatic transmission makes the 6x2 truck possible for this kind of application.

The VW 24.250E Worker 6x2 automatic provides concrete mixer fleet customers with easy operation and sufficient performance to overcome challenging conditions, including complicated access routes to construction sites, mud, uneven surfaces and steep slopes. The automatic truck is able to run precisely at extremely low speeds (0.18 km/h), making it easier to pour a curb or sidewalk without jerking. The vehicle powertrain transfers engine torque smoothly and efficiently from the transmission to the driving wheels, reducing slip in the kind of terrain encountered on construction sites. Quick, error-free gear shifting at the right time provides better overall performance.

Maximising vehicle productivity is an important aspect of the vehicle and transmission design, thanks to power-shifting and startability advantages made possible by the Allison torque converter. It is expected that the automatic transmission should allow the mixer VW 24.250E Worker 6x2 to achieve a higher average speed, resulting in increased volume of concrete delivered per workday. With no dry clutch, the Allison automatic transmission eliminates such maintenance costs as starting clutch adjustments or replacements.

Apart from the ability to focus on driving and with both hands on the steering wheel, driver training process is very easy. Concrete mixer drivers will likely experience lower stress levels at the end of their shifts. Finally, the automatic transmission has a provision for power take-off (PTO) offering an alternative design option to a traditional engine PTO set-up.

According to Clovis Kitahara, marketing manager for Allison Transmission in South America, the performance offered by the Allison automatic transmission in the new VW 24.250E Worker 6x2 mixer has been exceptional. "Allison automatics are engineered to offer an unrivalled combination of quality, reliability, durability and overall vocational value in some of the most demanding applications."
