Leading Products and Recognized Federal-Mogul Brands Provide Enhanced Power and Safety to Rail Transport

Berlin, 23 July 2010… Federal-Mogul, known first and foremost as a leading global automotive supplier, is also a specialist in the rail vehicle sector. Under Federal-Mogul's brands GOETZE, FERODO, Bentley Harris, National and DEVA, the company offers products that are crucial for keeping trains safely on track. As a result, the theme of Federal-Mogul's stand at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin (Stand 218, Hall 1.2) will be: "Stop and Go - We keep them rolling and we stop them all!"
In the railway sector, the GOETZE brand is best known for its piston rings, used in all the most renowned large tractor engines. Based on more than 100 years of experience and continuous product development in materials, high-performance coatings and designs, GOETZE piston rings have the specific characteristics to help improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and extend maintenance intervals. At InnoTrans, Federal-Mogul will feature new GOETZE large-size piston rings with diameters of between 145 and 300 millimeters. These not only seal the combustion chamber, but also ensure perfect lubrication of the cylinder wall; a crucial requirement for long operational life under the harshest of conditions.
While GOETZE supports the drive power, FERODO-branded friction products are famous for ensuring reliable stops. Whether used in high-speed bullet trains, in Intercities, in traction vehicles, streetcars or in freight traffic, FERODO ensures safety with innovative disc brake pads and brake blocks designs and materials. FERODO offers extremely high-grade organic LCC and high-temperature brake pads. These provide good frictional stability and higher friction material flexibility, which reduce the formation of hotspots on the brake discs. Together these characteristics improve the durability of the brake pads and brake discs.
The Federal-Mogul team is working closely with railway operators, brake system suppliers and rail vehicle manufacturers on optimized organic friction surface combinations for cast iron and steel brake discs that take into consideration customers' technical specifications. The team also draws on the experience and support of Federal-Mogul's entire international development engineering expertise in the car and truck sectors. This collaboration is the most effective means of developing the best possible friction products for rail vehicles. At InnoTrans, Federal-Mogul will provide an overview of the FERODO friction range, the materials used and potential applications.
Under its Bentley Harris brand, Federal-Mogul manufactures protection solutions for the transportation and electronic sectors. Its products protect components against abrasion, heat, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and noise. A new product highlight at InnoTrans will be the "ROUNDIT VO EMI", recently launched on the market. It provides excellent EMI shielding for wiring harnesses and meets the stringent rail industry regulations for fire, smoke and toxicity protection. Federal-Mogul has consistently transferred experiences gained in the automobile and aircraft industries, developing them into tailored solutions for the railway sector.
Federal-Mogul's lighting product group has adopted the same approach. Participating in InnoTrans for the first time, it will utilize the trade fair as a platform from which to position its lighting solutions in the railway industry. These solutions have been tried and tested in the automotive industry for many years. The Federal-Mogul lighting team will feature reading lamps that can be activated with a simple hand movement. Moreover, the product group is going to introduce metalized light technology featuring surfaces with a metalized appearance that can display the color of choice when lit.
Through its DEVA brand Federal-Mogul manufactures and distributes self-lubricating, maintenance-free plain bearings for the harshest of operating conditions. They are especially suitable for the railway sector. DEVA products are tried and tested as axle-box bearings, in bogies, rail brakes, automatic clutches and in pantographs. In rail gauge adjustment systems, rail supports or integrated overload equipment, DEVA's bearings can replace conventional, lubricated bearing supports. The company's IRIS certificate received at InnoTrans 2008 has been renewed recently.
Federal-Mogul's "National" brand will make its InnoTrans debut. Under this brand, Federal-Mogul distributes dynamic seals for roller bearings used in automotive vehicles, industrial applications and in the railway market. National supplies seals for the railway sector to all major roller bearing manufacturers. These applications are installed in modules consisting of tapered roller bearings and seals that are integrated in wheelset bearings. Federal-Mogul will display grease seals of classes E, F, G, GG and K at InnoTrans. These different standard sizes are used in freight wagons in North America, India, China and Russia.
The Federal-Mogul team at InnoTrans will highlight leading products for powertrains, friction, systems protection, lighting and sealing.
