Asbestos is present in 86% of UK Schools

There is now increasing pressure on the Government to assess the scale of the problem and the risks, to adopt a policy of openness and to implement practical policies that will ensure the safety of staff and children in the nation’s schools.

The BBC reported today that asbestos is still present in as many as 86% (nine out of ten) UK schools, which is a figure much higher than previously released by the Government.

These findings came from freedom of information requests through local authorities by Asbestos in Schools campaigner, Michael Lees, whose wife Gina died of mesothelioma in 2000. Over the last ten years, 158 teachers have died from mesothelioma and following the death of his wife, aged 51, it soon became clear in his investigation into her death that the lack of asbestos management and the resultant exposures of staff and pupils in schools is a national problem.

In the fifteen years since her death, he has campaigned tirelessly to make schools safe from the dangers of asbestos.

Michael has represented the Asbestos in Schools Group in meetings with the Prime Minister and Ministers and represents the victims of asbestos exposure on the DfE Asbestos Steering Group. Robin Nower is a Director at construction health and safety risk management services company, Derisk UK Limited.

Robin commented on the news announcement:

“The need for effective asbestos management solutions in schools is a burning issue that is not going away. Many of the areas that asbestos is still present may not be accessible to children (such as boiler rooms), however, these areas continue to be routinely accessed by premises staff and teachers. It is clear that more robust controls are desperately needed including: effective controlled access systems, dynamic asbestos management plans and systematic asbestos removal programmes.”

There is now increasing pressure on the Government to assess the scale of the problem and the risks, to adopt a policy of openness and to implement practical policies that will ensure the safety of staff and children in the nation’s schools.
