With Energy Efficiency being the 'hot topic' lately discussing the benefits of LED lighting is surely a priority to help consumers become more energy efficient

LED lights are said to be the ultimate eco-friendly lighting, some may agree and others might not, therefore discussing the effect that this form of lighting can have on your business is a must.

Before deciding whether LED lighting will benefit you as a consumer, you need to understand your needs and what will suit these needs.

A small background on LED lighting, LED stands for light-emitting diode. That is, simply, a semiconductor device that converts electricity to light by using the movement of electrons.

LED lighting is a lamp or other light that uses LEDs as a source of illumination. Most lighting comes from an incandescent or fluorescent light bulb. Different than the traditional bulb, LEDs can be put into traditional lamps and used like most other light bulbs. They are much more efficient than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

There are many suppliers who supply this lighting without being able to speak the 'LED language' and if there is a consumer focused on energy efficiency they want to know that the products they choose are reliable and exactly what they need.

In a recent article published by Wiring Matters Magazine, Mike Simpson, technical and design director at Philips UK said:

Philips Lighting is driving the LED lighting 'revolution', but as Simpson explains, the industry has suffered some confusion.

"When LED lights first came out, people were talking about efficiencies and everyone said wow, 150 lumens per watt," he says. "When they got the real lighting products they said 'but this is nothing like it'. Of course industry had been referring to the chip efficiencies and now we try to make it clear that product and chip efficiencies are two different things."

He also emphasised that the consumer, be it the luminaire manufacturer or and end user, must be sure they get the efficiency of the actual product they are buying. Consumers do however have to be aware, given they do not understand the difference, that they could be promised energy savings which are not correct.

Over a long period of time it has been said that LEDs are much more energy efficient, using up to 90% less than an incandescent bulb.

Mike Simpson continues:

"LEDs push light out in one direction, so if you compare an application where you want directional light, say spot lighting in your home, the LED produces more light for the power that goes in and is more effective at producing light in one direction, than a filament bulb in a reflective light fitting."

But what if the consumer does not want a directional spotlight? When a consumer is in a rush to cut energy bills and make instant savings, owners of shops, hotels, office blocks, even lifts, have been whipping out the 50W tungsten filament and plugging in a 10W LED, often with disappointing results.

A technical director of property and development at engineering consultant group, WSP UK, Simon Robinson says his experience indicates that in some cases, LEDs are used inappropriately as the sellers of LED lighting don't always understand what they are selling.

What's more, while the figures they provide for, say, efficiency and energy savings are true, they do not relate to what the general public understands.

"Why not have the manufacturers of LED products reference the lighting output of their products to something the general public understands?" he asks.

"This would be what the classic GLS light bulb is; a 100W or 60W lamp equivalent."

Failure to meet part L of the UK building regulations, which demands luminaires in commercial properties deliver at least 55 luminaire lumens per watt, is another issue his clients have faced.

Often LEDs have been fitted into poorly designed luminaires, or simply retrofitted into fluorescent light fittings, giving inadequate light output.

"There is nothing illegal about selling a luminaire that doesn't meet Part L; it is the fitting of it that counts," he explains. "And, because clients see LEDs as efficient, they assume the entire light fitting will meet building requirements; not always so."

Let's talk benefits

The energy efficiency of a light bulb is measured in lumens per watt, in simpler terms the amount of light produced for each watt of electricity consumed.

Therefore is you are adding more lumens per watt you will be getting more light for your money, the most common energy efficient light bulbs include energy saving or halogen incandescent, , compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), curly versions of the long tube fluorescent lights, and LEDs.

Today's white light LED bulb produces around 150 lumens per watt; this figure is predicted to increase to 250 lumens per watt in the next decade. In comparison, the CFL produces 60 to 80 lumens per watt while the halogen incandescent produces around 16 lumens per watt.

LED Lighting has in the domestic market really come to the fore over the last 12 months.

There are now LED Lamps / Luminaires that can provide elegant and fit for purpose lighting solutions while keeping energy and maintenance costs to a minimum.

There is of course a price to pay for this, but recently there seems to have been a switch over to LED from traditional incandescent and halogen lamps. The issue of dimming does still seem to be causing some issues to the market but it's just a case of knowing the amount of lamps you wish to dim, and making sure the dimmer is suitably rated.
